Earth Check - The world’s first certified thermal spa

Terme Merano has officially been recognised by EarthCheck, the leading global certification and benchmarking organisation for sustainable tourism.

This prestigious certification makes Terme Merano the first thermal spa in the world to receive the EarthCheck sustainability label. "This means that every decision we make is evaluated in terms of its environmental, resource-related, and financial impact – all based on rigorous sustainability criteria," says Stefan Thurin, President of Terme Merano.

With this step, Terme Merano reinforces its position as a pioneer and role model in the wellness and tourism industry. The certification marks a key milestone in its long-term sustainability strategy. The process is ongoing – with the goal of reaching the next, even higher level of EarthCheck certification.

When a tourism facility carries the EarthCheck certification, it signals that it has undergone a rigorous, science-based, and people-centred sustainability assessment. For guests, it offers a clear choice: EarthCheck-certified destinations stand for proven sustainability – enabling conscious, responsible travel decisions.

At Terme Merano, the certification journey has resulted in the integration of effective tools for managing environmental impact, conserving resources, and making mindful investments. The Terra Institute, based in Bressanone/Brixen, accompanied the entire process, which spanned more than three years.

Stewart Moore, CEO and founder of EarthCheck, praised the achievement:
“Terme Merano has taken a significant leadership position in terms of sustainability. By working with EarthCheck, Terme Merano has joined other industry leaders in taking meaningful steps to address the critical challenges facing our planet.”

A 360-degree approach to sustainability

Sustainability at Terme Merano is no short-term trend. For years, Terme Merano has followed consistent environmental principles across all areas of the business. It's not just about avoiding plastic – it’s about choosing better alternatives: from eco-friendly printer cartridges and sustainably sourced packaging materials to the conscious use of recycled products.

A recent flagship example is the newly completed Bio Nature Pool in the Thermal Park: a natural swimming pond that works entirely without chemicals or disinfectants, relying instead on the principles of the natural ecosystem. It is powered by energy from the spa’s own photovoltaic system – and the entire project was realised in collaboration with regional partners.
