The Merano theater, which was opened in 1900, was designed by the architect Martin Dülfer, who later made a name for himself as one of the founders of the Art Nouveau movement. The finest materials were employed for the elegant façade and the interior, which reflect all the familiar styles and design elements of the time. At first, mainly popular operettas were staged, while later the emphasis was on opera. The theater was named after Giacomo Puccini following the famous composer’s visit to Meran in 1923.
